Warwick Landfill Expansion Fact Sheet
WM initiated the proposed expansion of the Warwick landfill
site in 1998 because of its location within southwestern Ontario
and its disposal capacity for the company's municipal and private
sector customers.
WM is proposing to build an environmentally safe, multi-purpose
waste management facility. It will include recycling and composting
operations, and a modern landfill. Plans for the landfill include
capturing the landfill gas and turning it into energy.
The expansion will create additional landfill capacity of
up to 750,000 tonnes per year for approximately 25 years, accepting
solid, non-hazardous waste from residential, industrial, commercial
and institutional customers in southwestern and central Ontario.
The expanded site would be created south and west of the
existing site on lands owned by Waste Management for a total
of 110 hectares. It would be similar in size and scale to many
of the new landfills currently in operation or being built in
Ontario, as well as across North America.
The site will employ up to 30 employees and 25 contractors
during regular operation with up to an additional 25 contractors
during construction as the landfill is developed in phases every
two years.
