Participating in the Public Consultation Process
The province's Environmental Assessment Act includes
specific requirements for community consultation when companies
are seeking to create or expand landfills. In addition, WM's public
consultation plan was itself subject to consultation. The public
consultation process has been, and will continue to be, carried
out by IER Planning, Research and Management Services.
Public consultation has taken place at every
stage of the Environmental Assessment process, through study groups,
public meetings, open houses, a toll-free number and numerous
publications. Consultation has taken place with specific stakeholder
groups and an Environmental Assessment Study Group (EASG).
The EASG comprises representatives from community
groups and the general public, and will continue to meet to review
the discussion papers. Waste Management will also continue public
consultation on a broader scale, inviting public comment through
distribution of discussion papers and the organization of public
open houses/presentations.
